Sound Healing Meditation In Bali
WHAT ARE SOUND BATHS?
Imagine yourself reclining back on a mat, surrounded by calming noises that come over you like soft waves. I call this a sound bath. A sound bath is a type of meditation in which resonant tones created by instruments like crystal bowls, gongs, and chimes are used in place of silence or guided vocal instructions. You feel these sounds vibrating through your whole body as well as hearing them.
The first step in a sound bath is usually for participants to lie down comfortably, frequently with their eyes closed to improve the sensory experience. Then, using a range of instruments, the practitioner crafts a soundscape that may evoke a profoundly meditative state. To “bathe” you in music is to encourage healing and relaxation on many levels.
INSTRUMENTS OF PEACE: INVESTIGATING GONGS AND BOWLS
Carefully selected for their special vibrational properties are the instruments used in sound bath meditation. Gongs and crystal bowls rank among the most often used instruments.
Crystal Bowls
Many times constructed of pure quartz, crystal bowls produce powerful, clear, resonant tones. Every bowl has a predetermined note that represents one of the body’s seven chakras, or energy centres. A bowl tuned to the note C, for example, is connected to the grounding and safety-related root chakra. Many people characterise the sound of a crystal bowl as ethereal, almost alien. These bowls can be played to produce a very immersive experience that helps to release obstructions and bring energy balance back.
Gongs
The powerful sound vibrations of gongs have been used for a long period of time in many cultures. Going beyond the single, sustained note produced by crystal bowls, gongs produce a wide range of overtones and sounds. The body can feel released and rejuvenated by the rich tapestry of sound that can reach deep within. Sometimes referred to as “gong baths,” these are especially effective for people who want to release long-term stress and anxiety. By “shake loose” bad energy, the gong’s vibrations can facilitate healing and rejuvenation.
ACCESSING CALM: FIRSTHAND ACCOUNTS AND TESTIMONIALS
Best realized via the experiences of people who have adopted this practice is the actual power of sound bath meditation. Here are a few testimonies from people who have experienced sound baths’ transforming power.
Story of Sudheshna:
Mother of two and yoga instructor Sudheshna found herself fighting stress and exhaustion all the time. “I felt this underlying tension even after trying everything from yoga to traditional meditation,” she says. “I had never had a sound bath before, but a friend suggested one. The noises appeared to wipe away every worry and stress. I had not felt that calm and reenergized in years after only one session.”
Experiences of Mukesh:
Executive in business Mukesh was first dubious. “I didn’t think lying down and listening to noises could do much,” he acknowledges. “I was astounded, though, the first time I went to a sound bath. Although strong, the gong vibrations were positive. It was as though a huge weight had been removed from my shoulders. It now forms a regular component of my schedule.”
Ektaβs Path:
College student Ekta battled worry and sleeplessness. “I needed something to help me unwind badly,” she admits. Favorite dishes were the crystal ones. They sound so peaceful and innocent. I started feeling more relaxed during the day and sleeping better. As though the sound baths restored my system.”
