Bali Yoga School Offers
What Makes Aerial Yoga Special?
Aerial yoga is a strange blend of meditative and playful. You’re never bored, as the practice continually pulls you back into the here and now, constantly challenging you in small manageable ways. It’s not something that you can learn in a day. It takes weeks of being there, of being uncomfortable, being there, of getting used to being uncomfortable, until things begin to “click.” However, when they do, most practitioners describe it as one of the more rewarding experiences they’ve had on this path, irrespective of how long they’ve been practicing yoga.

A Modern Yet Traditional Practice
The real magic of aerial yoga lies in its ability to retain the essence of traditional yoga practices while infusing them with a playful and modern twist. It does not require you to pick up between tradition and modern movement. Rather, it integrates both and through the practice creates a journey that, much like going for a walk, is surprisingly transformative in ways more than just physical; it’s also in how you relate to your own body.
For Beginners and Experienced Yogis
It’s not necessary to have years of yoga practice to begin. The difference between complete beginners and seasoned yogis is not where they come from, it’s how often you come here and how much you are interested in continuing to learn, even when a pose isn’t easy at first.

When you're new to aerial yoga, the first thing you need to wrap your head around is the hammock itself, of course, since nothing in this practice takes place without it. The fabric feels soft to the skin, but strong enough to support 100% of the weight of the practitioner without fear of it tearing and not so tight that it prevents any movement of the practitioner through the fabric. The hammock is adjusted before each session to ensure that everyone can train comfortably and safely at their level of ability and experience, irrespective of body type.
Rather than being just equipment, imagine the hammock as a tool that unlocks possibilities of movement that can only be enjoyed in the hammock, and which floor-based yoga cannot provide. It works to help the body through challenging poses, enables space for safe inversions and offers a depth of movement that is virtually "weightless" compared to traditional practice.
Safe Spine Decompression
Assists in the safe decompression and inversion of the spine.
Improved Flexibility
Assists with hip, shoulder and hamstring flexibility.
Upper Body Strength
Effective upper body, arms and shoulder strengtheners.
Balance & Coordination
Improves balance, coordination and posture.
Joy & Confidence
Creates a sense of joy, adventure and confidence.
Self Exploration
Helps practitioners explore themselves more deeply.
Natural Spine Relief
The gentle upside-down position helps decompress the spine and relieve pressure on the discs.
Body Awareness
Suspended poses improve coordination, perception and mindfulness.
How the Hammock Supports Your Practice
Here is how the hammock actively supports your practice:
Spinal Decompression
By using inversion through the hammock, long-term spinal health is enhanced, and this is difficult to achieve through other methods.
More Flexibility
The give in the fabric extends your range of movement into the postures which is more than you can achieve on a mat, particularly in the hips, hamstrings and shoulders.
Core and Upper Body Strength
Constantly moving and maintaining the hips, arms and shoulders in hammock position throughout the session will ensure that the core, upper body and shoulder girdle are continuously working and developing throughout the session creating functional strength.
Balance and Body Awareness
Learning to balance in and against the hammock will help focus coordination and mindfulness that is not always necessary on the floor.
What Typically Happens During an Aerial Yoga Class
The teacher teaches alignment throughout each Aerial Yoga session and helpful adjustments and breath work. They are always aware of the safety and confidence of all their students and each class is a positive, progressive and safe class experience from start to finish.
Warm-Up
Class begins with gentle stretches, breathing exercises and a light warm up to prepare the body to work safely and comfortably with aerial movements.
Hammock Set-Up
Students arrange their own hammock to their own body level. They will have instructors available at all times to assist in making things set up the right way and secure before practice.
Guided Postures and Flows
Teacher chooses and sequences poses and flows specifically for aerial practice, designed to build progressively throughout the session.
Aerial Inversions
Students work on partial and full inversions as they lower the spine to open it, enhance circulation and allow for a release throughout the body.
Deep Stretching
Students use the hammock to make movements that they wouldn't be able to make on the floor. The results will be immediately felt, and will progressively improve by practice.
Savasana and Relaxation
the class ends in Savasana in the hammock, the body supported by the fabric. At the end of this last rest, students will feel calm, refreshed and very relaxed.
