THE HISTORY OF YIN YOGA

Yin Yoga has its origin from China and is based on the Taoist principles of Yin and Yang. This idea is rooted in Chinese philosophy, health, and religion as two opposing forces: Yin stands for calmness, night, and passivity, whereas Yang is associated with movement, day, and energy.

Whereas the styles of yoga which are popular today such as Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and power yoga are dynamic, muscular, and fast-paced (Yang), Yin Yoga is slow, passive, and meditative. It concentrates on the fascial system which includes ligaments, tendons, and fascia by holding the postures for 3-5 minutes or more to address the deeper tissues of the body as well as the psyche.

Traditional Chinese Medicine divides the human body into channels or meridians and relates them to organs, feelings, and sensations. Yin Yoga postures press and release these meridians, regulating the energy and keeping the body healthy. Through bringing the practitioner back to stillness and the present, Yin Yoga is a perfect antidote to the Yang dominated society of today.

BENEFITS OF YIN YOGA

Benefits of Yin Yoga

Improved Joint Flexibility: Failure to alter postures for extended durations leads to the stiffening of connective tissues and their hydration.

Better Circulation: Standing for long periods is useful to increase circulation to the muscles and also to increase energy.

Stress Management & Emotional Release: The parasympathetic nervous system will be employed for stress and anxiety reduction and for the purpose of emotional discharge.

Mind-Body Connection: It promotes self-identification and self-governance, which helps build up a person.

Improved Sleep Quality: Yin Yoga is a slow and passive kind of yoga that aches the muscles and benefits the mind, so it can assist people to sleep better.

Balanced Energy: The two types of energies, Yin and Yang, are central to the balance of day to day life.
